What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency can take many forms. Some patients arrive in acute pain with no warning, while others are dealing with an obvious injury after a fall or sporting accident. It is not always easy to know what qualifies as urgent, but if something feels wrong, it is always worth reaching out. Acting early can make a huge difference to the outcome.

The most common emergencies we treat include severe toothache, chipped or broken teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental abscesses, knocked-out (avulsed) teeth, bleeding or swelling inside the mouth and pain after recent dental work. These problems may not be life-threatening, but they can be deeply distressing, especially if left untreated.

Dental pain also tends to get worse over time, so it is best to act quickly.

Same-day appointments and compassionate care

Your visit will begin with a focused examination to determine the source of the problem. We use digital X-rays and high-definition imaging where needed to provide a clear picture of what is going on beneath the surface.

Once we have diagnosed the issue, we will explain your treatment options and deliver the care you need, either on the spot or with a short-term solution to manage your symptoms until a more permanent appointment is possible.

Managing toothache and infection

Toothache can develop gradually or appear suddenly and severely. It is often caused by tooth decay, trauma, gum infection or an emerging abscess. Even if the pain is intermittent, it should not be ignored. Infection can spread quickly and lead to more serious problems if left untreated.

When you visit Dentexcel with tooth pain, we will assess the area and identify whether the nerve is affected or whether infection is present. You may need a temporary dressing, drainage of infection, antibiotics or root canal treatment depending on the cause.

Our priority is always to control the pain and stabilise the tooth, giving you breathing space to make informed decisions about follow-up care. 

Reattaching or replacing broken and knocked-out teeth

Dental trauma can happen in an instant. A fall, an accident or a sports injury can leave you with a chipped, fractured or completely avulsed tooth. If a tooth has been knocked out, timing is critical. The sooner you are seen, the better the chances of saving the tooth.

If you are able to retrieve the knocked-out tooth, avoid touching the root and gently rinse it under water if it is dirty. Place it in milk or saliva and bring it with you to the clinic as soon as possible. In some cases, the tooth can be reimplanted and stabilised.

For cracked or chipped teeth, we will assess the damage and restore the tooth using composite bonding, a dental crown or a temporary repair. Our cosmetic expertise ensures that your results will look natural, even in high-pressure situations.

Emergency care for broken crowns, fillings and bridges

When a crown or filling breaks, it can expose the inner part of the tooth to bacteria and sensitivity. Some patients experience pain when eating or drinking, while others are more concerned about the visible appearance. Either way, these situations need urgent attention.

At Dentexcel, we can often repair or replace lost restorations on the same day. If the existing crown or filling can be reused, we will carefully clean and refit it. If new work is required, we can place a temporary cover until a permanent solution is ready. Our on-site scanning and lab access allows us to fast-track the process where possible.
